The air ducts in your Arvada home are its respiratory system. They carry warm and cool air from the central heating and cooling unit and distribute it throughout the house. Most of the time the air ducts do a bang-up job distributing clean, refreshing air. But if the ducts themselves become clogged with dirt, dust, allergens and other airborne pollutants then that is what they wind up distributing. In most cases, it's recommended you have the air ducts cleaned every couple of years. There are, however, some circumstances that call for immediate air duct cleaning, even if you had them cleaned just a few months earlier. Below, we’ll go through those must-clean scenarios.
If any of the following are relevant to your situation you should call Steve’s immediately.
Adding a home extension, remodeling the kitchen or bathroom, finishing the basement, having your hardwood floors sanded and other construction projects should be followed immediately by thorough air duct cleaning. Why? Because while we tend to fixate on the visible results of home improvement projects we often forget that any type of construction sends enormous amounts of dust, sawdust, dirt, VOCS (volatile organic compounds) and who knows what else into the air, with much of it sucked into the air ducts. If nothing is done your HVAC system will be recycling this debris throughout the house for years to come endangering everyone's health.
Many allergies people ascribe to outside sources can actually trace their roots to the home. If you or a member of your family develop an allergy of mysterious origins, or if someone’s allergies or asthma suddenly seem to worsen, it’s time to have the ducts professionally cleaned. The air ducts are perpetually out of sight so it’s impossible to keep track of what might be collecting inside them. That may include dust, pollen, pet dander, pet hair, rodent hair and rodent feces (!) and more. If allergies suddenly become a problem or existing allergies worsen, call Steves.
If you have a central heating and cooling unit in your home the indoor air should always smell fresh and clean. If you notice a musty odor hanging over the house it indicates something is amiss inside the air ducts. In most cases, a musty odor indicates the growth of mold somewhere inside the ductwork. And mold is not something you want to ignore. Several types release spores that can cause respiratory distress including histoplasmosis, a fungal infection that attacks the lungs. If left untreated it may spread to the sac surrounding the heart and morph into pericarditis, an often fatal condition. Professional air duct cleaning can often eliminate any mold problems and restore your home to a healthy state.
The fact is you never really know what the people who lived in the house before you were up to, or weren’t up to. They may have lived there 20 years or more without ever having the ducts cleaned. Or, if they renovated the kitchen or other rooms they may have failed to clean the ducts afterward. If they had pets that’s another red flag that you should clean the ducts. And if the house was ever subjected to flooding or other types of storm damage air duct cleaning would have been imperative. They may swear to you that everything is hunky-dory but, with all due respect, people will say a lot of things to secure a house sale. Don't take any chances. After moving into a new house in Arvada, call Steve’s.
Finding squirrels, raccoons, mice, opossums or other pests in and around the ductwork is more common than you think. These creatures are like any other in that they seek out safe places to live and rear their young. The problem is that by taking up residence in your ductwork to protect their family they are endangering your family. Rodent hairs, decaying fecal matter, dead skin cells and other byproducts of pest infestations are circulated throughout the house and can cause severe respiratory problems. If you have recently had pests removed from your air ducts make sure you finish the job by having the ducts thoroughly cleaned afterward.
If after turning on the furnace or air conditioner you see dust being expelled from a supply register, any supply register, it’s a huge red flag that your ducts need cleaning. Likewise, if you notice that there is black debris on the outside of the supply register it’s another sign that something is amiss inside the ducts, whether or not you see the telltale puff. If you see either or both of these signs it’s time to give Steve’s a call.
